Dry vs. Wet AMD: Why Sudden Vision Changes Need Prompt Attention

Sudden changes in the center of your sight deserve attention, especially when straight lines begin to look bent, a dark area appears, or familiar details become harder to make out. At Tres Vision Group, our team provides macular degeneration care for patients in Melbourne, Merritt Island, and Suntree, Florida. Board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Rafael Trespalacios specializes in treating macular degeneration.
How Dry and Wet AMD Differ
Age-related macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central sight. Dry AMD is the more common form and often develops slowly as protein deposits collect beneath the macula. Early symptoms may be easy to overlook, then gradually interfere with reading, recognizing faces, driving, or seeing fine detail.
Wet AMD behaves differently. Abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid, which may cause rapid blurring, distortion, or a dark area in the middle of what you see. Dry AMD can sometimes progress to wet AMD, causing symptoms to worsen much more quickly.
Signs That Should Be Checked Without Delay
AMD symptoms vary, but new distortion, blurring, or missing areas in your sight should be examined without delay. Warning signs may include:
- New waviness or bending in straight lines
- Blurred or hazy areas in the center of your sight
- A gray, dark, or blank spot
- Faces or printed words appearing distorted
- A noticeable decline over days or weeks
Our guide to macular degeneration symptoms explains why reduced contrast, wavy lines, and central blurring deserve attention. An Amsler grid allows you to check each eye separately for curved lines or missing areas, although home monitoring cannot replace an eye exam.
What Happens During an AMD Evaluation?
During a comprehensive eye exam, our doctors can determine whether the symptoms point to AMD or another condition. Testing may include optical coherence tomography, or OCT, which creates detailed images of the retina and can reveal changes in the macula. Comparing current findings with earlier exams may also show how quickly the condition is progressing.
When wet AMD is diagnosed, treatment may involve intravitreal injections that place anti-VEGF medication inside the eye. These medicines are used to control abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid leakage. Wet AMD can permanently damage sight, so delaying an evaluation may limit the opportunity to preserve remaining vision.
